As an undergraduate student, whether you are taking a course or volunteering, you will be intensively trained in running a research project. This includes instruction in research ethics, programming environments used in data collection, statistics programs used for data analysis, and answering questions about the project. You will become familiar with the literature on learning, memory, and attention, gain experience in scientific writing (e.g., APA style research reports), present at local, national, and, sometimes, international conferences. You will also have the opportunity to co-author refereed journal articles.
As a graduate student, you will get more advanced training in research design and methods, statistical analysis, and computer programming. You will oversee all aspects of a research project, including training, quality assurance, logistics, design and programming, data analysis and interpretation, and dissemination. You will develop skills that emphasize strong experimental design, proper use of research analysis procedures, ethical treatment of participants, and theoretical integrity of the project. You will publish papers and present at conferences to disseminate findings in research communities, and will facilitate knowledge mobilization to stakeholders in the pedagogy and higher education communities.
As a postdoctoral fellow, you will have the opportunity to advance your scholarly training and research through cutting-edge design methods and analyses. You acquire the skills needed to successfully pursue a career path in academia or in industry, depending on your goals.
